Rug Of The Month August 2022: Everything Is Change - The Sichouk SI50

We associate the month of August with high summer temperatures and lots of time under the blue sky in our latitudes. We know August as the summer month. But south of the equator, August is a winter month.

So it always depends on which perspective we take. If we change our point of view, everything changes. It's the same with our carpet of the month, the Sichouk SI50. He calls for a change of perspective.

Panta rhei – A New Carpet Every Morning

Everything flows - we cannot step into the same river twice. This is the short formula on which the worldview of the ancient thinker Heraclitus is based. Following this, can we then lie down twice on the same carpet? No, according to Heraclitus we cannot do that, because everything is constantly changing. So the Sichouk SI50 that you put in your living space is a new carpet every morning and still remains a Sichouk SI50. Just as you are constantly changing and yet remain you.

Now, Heraclitus was not a carpet philosopher and we will not call him one, but his worldview is still, or especially today, very relevant. Although the ancient tradition of carpet weaving seems to contradict the constant process of becoming and passing away, since it counters today's fast pace of life by sticking to old traditions, the change is also noticeable in the carpet trade.

The company Mischioff was founded in Switzerland in the 1940s. The small carpet dealer quickly became a well-known importer of classic oriental carpets. The two sons and current managing directors, Dani and Sascha Misio, launched their first carpet collection on the market in the 1990s and became pioneers of modern carpet development with their completely new designs and subtle colors. Completely new thematic worlds emerged with their reinterpretation of antique designs. The focus has always been on achieving the highest levels of quality, and the Sichouk Collection with its pure silk carpets is an example of this. The latest carpet in this collection, the Sichouk SI50 presented here, stands in the tradition of previous work and is at the same time an expression of constant further development and change.

Sichouk SI50

A Masterpiece Of Modern Carpet Making

As a pure silk carpet with a pile height of approx. eight millimeters, it is a carpet that plays with the light, every breeze and at the same time with the viewer. The earthy colors give the Sichouk SI50 the character of a robust companion, the silky shimmer makes it a gentleman under the carpets and the light and cheerful design gives it youthful charm. Whatever you want to see in this rug, it's all there.

The Sichouk SI50 is a masterpiece of modern carpet manufacture, as well as a master of versatility. Depending on which room it embellishes, its effect is always adapted to the things around it. In a modern setting with clean lines and few distractions, he will be the radiant focal point. But the Sichouk SI50 is just as well at home in a rustic half-timbered house, where it conjures up a lot of cosiness with its warmth. The Sichouk SI50 changes rooms and thus shows what a Mischioff carpet is capable of and that perhaps Heraclitus was a carpet philosopher with his ideas of becoming and changing? Although Heraclitus is said not to have been a particularly great philanthropist, his philosophical debates were always about human nature. And nothing characterizes the essence of a person more than the living space that he creates.

Tradition In Transition

The craft of carpet weaving is ancient and in fact it is still carried out today as it was hundreds of years ago. But the general conditions have changed in many ways. We have been working with the Swiss certification label STEP for more than ten years so that the focus is also on people in the process of creating Mischioff fair-trade rugs. Thanks to this cooperation, the working and living conditions of the weavers are not only fair, they are constantly being improved.

The standards defined by the International Labor Organization (ILO) form the basis of STEP's work. It contains criteria for workplace design, for fair payment, for the promotion of training, for ecological production processes and, of course, the exclusion of any child labor. In this way, Mischioff also becomes part of the change that people have in their hands to shape themselves - towards a better world.
