A carpet full of stories

Svarga SV08

The history of silk begins more than 5,000 years ago in China. For many centuries, the Chinese managed to keep the secret of its origin and production a closely guarded secret. Along the famous Silk Road, whose origins date back to the first century BC, not only goods but also stories were traded. Humankind has always had a need to understand the inexplicable. And where no answers exist, people invent them.

The most beautiful stories, fairy tales, myths, and legends originate in the inexplicable world. Even Marco Polo, in his accounts, never tires of mentioning the countless musicians and storytellers along the Silk Road. With the Svarga SV08, we pay homage to the tradition of storytelling and the high art of silk production in China.

A high-pile carpet made of pure silk

The Svarga SV08 is a pure, high-pile silk rug , made entirely by hand. And as modern as this designer rug appears, it embodies a wealth of ancient myths and legends, inherent in the precious material of silk.

When the first caravans set off from east to west, laden with precious silk, their route led through the inhospitable Taklamakan Desert in China and over the snow-covered passes of the Pamir Mountains. The journey from China to the Mediterranean took several years, and new routes, stopovers, and trading posts were constantly being established. Thus, what is known today as the Silk Road is actually a network of thousands of routes.

Our silk carpet , with its vibrant colors, evokes the caravan routes of bygone eras. The shimmering white beige, gently transitioning into darker beiges and blues, gradually yields to the first shades of gray and blue, finally fading into a glittering black-violet. In this way, the Svarga SV08 tells the stories of star-studded night skies, snow-capped mountain peaks, and sun-drenched desert sands. And it tells them with an uncanny, almost mystical radiance and magic, as if non-human beings had truly been at work here.

Spun myth

Even the people who first held the precious material silk in their hands believed in magic. They thought it must have been birds from paradise or divine animals that brought such a fabric to Earth. Do we really know how it happened? How might people have reacted when they realized that a tiny caterpillar was the origin of a cultural history that continues to this day?

Legend has it that two monks were the first to smuggle a few silkworm eggs to Byzantium, supposedly hidden in their walking sticks. But even though this marked the beginning of silk production outside of China, the quality of Chinese silk remains unsurpassed to this day. There's a secret to Chinese silk that can only be grasped through sensory experience. To look at the material with your eyes, to touch it with your hands, to place a high-pile silk rug in your favorite room and then listen to the stories – it simply can't be a tiny caterpillar.

Carpet trading without robbers and guns

Caravans no longer travel today, robbers with pistols no longer lurk on trade routes, and deserts and mountains are easily traversed. Today, the production and global trade of carpets presents different challenges. Mischioff carpets like the Svarga SV08 are hand-knotted in the Nepalese Manufactory over many months. Ensuring the safety and well-being of the weavers is Mischioff's top priority.

With a partner like the Swiss Fair Trade label STEP, this is achieved exceptionally well. Fair Trade means that everything, from the sourcing of the raw silk to the first spun silk thread and finally to the finished carpet that lies in your home, is fair and transparent. It's a task we gladly and diligently undertake. You can be sure that we don't spread myths in these matters, nor do we let ourselves be misled.
