Shaggy Plain ARS G016

Cozy shaggy rug from Mischioff

A high-pile carpet represents coziness and creates an inviting and cozy living atmosphere. This is why floor coverings are becoming increasingly popular.

Smooth or shaggy – the main thing is high pile

Although there is no fixed definition, experts generally refer to a pile height of around 1.5 centimeters as high pile. However, the length of the fibers can also be significantly longer and amount to three to four centimeters. The longer the pile or the individual fibers, the more “shaggy” is the look. Such a carpet looks cozy, but is often not easy to care for.

Differences can also be found in the material and production. If you pay attention to high quality, you should always choose a handmade carpet made from pure natural materials . After all, a comfortable shag carpet should provide years of enjoyment. The fluffy comfort of long-pile carpets is unparalleled and is suitable for almost every room. When your feet sink into the cozy shaggy pile, you'll understand what we're talking about.

Hand-knotted deep-pile carpets made from natural materials

The material is crucial for quality and feel. Mischioff relies on pure natural materials . Our own carpet collections consist exclusively of high-quality virgin wool, sometimes combined with fine silk or pure silk. The high quality of the raw material plays a crucial role: the higher quality the materials, the softer the carpets . For this traditional Swiss company, only the highest quality types of wool are considered.

Virgin wool from the Himalayas , Chinese silk and the sustainable and vegan fiber Lyocell serve as valuable raw materials for the versatile collections. These materials not only impress with their soft and fluffy surface, but are also robust and easy to care for . The natural materials are naturally stable and dirt-repellent, which means that the carpets retain their elegance even after many years of use.

Clean and care for shag carpets

Shaggy carpets are cozy living companions , but they can also have some disadvantages. Depending on the pile height, Shaggys are generally more difficult to clean than other carpets. Despite regular vacuuming, dust and dirt can get stuck between the fibers. Therefore, such a carpet should be beaten out more often . For stubborn stains, professional carpet cleaning is recommended.

Due to the complicated care required, most Mischioff collections offer short-pile carpets with a pile height of around eight to ten millimeters. But there are also high-pile models in our range: For example, our luxurious Svarga Collection made of 100% pure high-pile silk with a pile height of around two centimeters and our extremely comfortable Shaggy Plain Collection made of 100% Lyocell with a fiber length of around three centimeters .

A disadvantage of high-pile carpets can be the lint and hair on the carpets. A shag carpet loses fibers more often than a short-shorn carpet because the high-pile fibers are easier to pull out. The most important criterion for quality is the knot density. The more densely a carpet is knotted, the fewer fibers it loses .

Hand knotting is preferable to the machine version. Machine-made carpets are significantly more prone to shedding , which means that the deep pile loses its elegance after a while. A hand-knotted Mischioff carpet with its careful and fine weaving prevents the carpets from shedding.

Shaggy carpets in the best hand-knotted quality

The deep pile carpets from the traditional Swiss company are always handcrafted, high-quality products . These designer pieces are a far cry from the “shaggy carpets” that are often offered in furniture store chains. Perfect workmanship and the best material quality ensure that Mischioff customers can enjoy their deep pile for a long time.

With a large selection of our own carpet lines, the range offers the right carpet for almost every taste and furnishing style. The production of the high-quality carpets takes place exclusively in our own Manufactory in Nepal.

All collections are made entirely by hand

Before the high-quality material can be combined into a carpet, it goes through various work processes . In addition to combing, washing, spinning and dyeing the wool, this also includes the subsequent carpet weaving . After the carpet is completed, it is subjected to an intensive quality check by experienced employees.

The versatile range offers carpets of different styles: whether patchwork carpets , silk carpets or vintage carpets - the Mischioff collections have something to suit every style.

Deep pile carpets from the Marouk Collection

We would like to introduce you to some of our other collections as examples of our range. The carpets in the Marouk Collection are available in individual sizes and colors. Visually, these carpets resemble a classic Berber carpet, although, in contrast to the Moroccan model, the pile is smooth and not shaggy.

The carpets from the Shaggy Plain Collection are made from the sustainable cellulose fiber Lyocell. With their individual and natural look, Plain Carpets offer a special charm. With a deep pile of around 30 millimeters, the carpets have an extremely soft character and are still extremely easy to care for.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about shaggy carpets

A shag carpet differs from other types of carpet in some distinctive features:

  • Long fibers: Shaggy carpets are characterized by their long fibers, typically over 1.5 centimeters long, creating a soft, fluffy surface.
  • Structure and comfort: The dense and soft structure of these rugs offers a high level of comfort and therefore creates a unique cosiness.
  • Variety of materials: At Mischioff, virgin wool, lyocell or silk are used for the shaggy carpets. But they can also be made from synthetic fibers such as polyester or polypropylene.
  • Care: Due to the length of the pile, dust and dirt are more likely to remain hidden, requiring particularly thorough cleaning and care to maintain their beauty and functionality.
  • Variety of Styles: Shaggy rugs are available in a variety of colors and patterns, ranging from simple and solid designs to complex patterns that can be easily integrated into various décor styles.

Shaggy carpets not only impress with their functional properties, but also with their aesthetic flexibility, which allows them to be adapted to different living styles.

Deep-pile and long-pile carpets differ mainly in the length of the fibers and the resulting care requirements as well as their use in different living areas:

Pile length:

  • Shaggy carpets have pile lengths between 1.5 and 3 centimeters. This fiber length is sufficient to provide a soft and comfortable walking experience while still keeping care requirements low.
  • Long pile carpets have a fiber length of over 3 centimeters. This additional length results in a significantly more lush and often perceived even more luxurious texture.

Texture:

  • With shag carpets, the texture is soft, but with enough structure to withstand the wear and tear of everyday life.
  • Due to the longer fibers, long-pile carpets offer an even softer and denser surface, which, however, is less dimensionally stable and more prone to matting.

Areas of application:

  • Shaggy carpets are suitable for higher traffic areas such as living rooms or hallways due to their more durable nature and easier maintenance.
  • Long-pile rugs are more commonly used in areas with less foot traffic, such as bedrooms or less-used sitting areas, as they require a little more maintenance but are considered particularly decorative due to their rich texture.

A Shaggy carpet, also known as a flokati, is a special type of high-pile carpet that is characterized by its long, loose-fitting fibers. This type of carpet offers a distinctive look and a particularly soft feel. The characteristic features of Shaggy carpets are:

  • Irregular fibers: Its long fibers are often cut unevenly, giving the carpet its typical “shaggy” appearance.
  • Comfort and softness: The dense and long fiber structure of these rugs makes them particularly soft and comfortable. They provide a warm and cozy feeling underfoot, making them ideal for colder climates or simply a cozy addition to your living space.

Shaggy rugs offer a unique combination of style, comfort and luxury, making them a preferred choice for many home styles.

Shaggy carpets can and should be vacuumed regularly to remove dust, dirt and allergens that can become lodged deep in the long fibers. We have put together some tips and recommendations for vacuuming shag carpets:

  1. Type of vacuum cleaner: For shag carpets, vacuum cleaners with adjustable brushes are best suited to adjust the brush roll according to the pile height. Alternatively, the brush can be removed or a particularly soft brush roller can be used. This prevents the fibers from being damaged by too close contact with the brush or getting caught in the vacuum cleaner.
  2. Suction power regulation: A vacuum cleaner with adjustable suction power is advantageous because too strong suction power can strain the fibers and damage the carpet. A lower setting is gentler yet effective enough to thoroughly clean the carpet.
  3. Frequency: Shaggy carpets should be vacuumed at least once a week to prevent dirt and dust from accumulating. In households with pets or high levels of dust, more frequent vacuuming may also be necessary.

To ensure that the long fibers are not damaged, in addition to regular vacuuming, some other effective methods and tips for caring for and cleaning high-pile carpets should be observed:

  1. Stain treatment: If you have stains, you should act quickly.
Immediately blot spills with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid rubbing as this can push the stain deeper into the fibers. Use a mild carpet cleaner or a solution of water and mild soap to treat the stain. Always test cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first to ensure there is no discoloration or damage to the carpet.
  2. Shake and Hang: Smaller shag carpets can be shaken to remove loose dirt particles. Occasionally hang the rug outdoors, but not in direct sunlight as this may cause the colors to fade.
  3. Professional carpet cleaning: A shag carpet should ideally be professionally cleaned every two to three years, especially if it is exposed to a lot of wear and tear or is in a household with pets.
  4. Protective measures: Avoid placing heavy furniture on the carpet or alternatively use carpet protectors. If possible, you should also avoid walking on the carpet with street shoes.

Shaggy carpets can lose their fluffiness over time, especially in high-traffic areas. Here are some steps to help you return your carpet to its original texture and comfort:

  • Deep Cleaning: When cleaning the carpet thoroughly, start with vacuuming and follow the suction and brush tips mentioned above.
  • Moisture and care: After vacuuming, a slight moistening can help the fibers stand up again. Use a steam cleaner to lightly dampen the carpet. However, the carpet should not get too wet as this can lead to mold growth.
  • Brushing: Use a soft brush or carpet comb to gently untangle and straighten the fibers. Start at one corner and work your way in small sections.
  • Drying: Allow the carpet to air dry completely before using it again. Place it in a well-ventilated area, but avoid direct sunlight as this can damage the fibers and fade the colors.
  • Shake regularly: Smaller carpets can be shaken regularly to loosen the fibers and restore fluffiness.
  • Using Carpet Protectors: To preserve fluffiness, place carpet protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to avoid pressure points that can permanently flatten the fibers.
  • Professional help: If your carpet is severely matted or damaged, it may make sense to seek professional help. Carpet cleaning experts have the tools and knowledge to refresh the fibers without risk of damage.
