Fair trade carpets ensure sustainable production
The carpet industry is an important economic component of various producing countries, including Iran, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, and Turkey. Carpet weaving is a traditional craft in these countries and provides a livelihood for many people and their families.
Fair and secure wage agreements are therefore an integral component of fair carpet trade and form the basis for living wages for the weavers.

This includes environmentally friendly production, ensuring the health and safety of employees, compliance with maximum working and rest periods, and intolerance towards discrimination of any kind or sexual harassment.

Child labor? Forbidden!
An equally important aspect of fair trade carpets is the clear principle: child labor is prohibited! Thanks to various measures and initiatives, the proportion of child labor has decreased rapidly in the last ten years. Fair wages also contribute to this, making child labor unnecessary for the livelihoods of weavers' families.
Instead, the children are placed in established daycare centers and educated in schools. Compliance with the ban on child labor is regularly monitored and is an important licensing requirement for fair trade carpets.
As a long-standing partner of the independent fair trade organization Label STEP, Mischioff is committed to the strict prohibition of child labor and supports the establishment of daycare centers and schools. In addition to unannounced inspections by Label STEP, Mischioff's two managing directors, Dani and Sascha Misio, also regularly check compliance with their self-imposed fair trade standards in their own production facilities.
For this traditional Swiss company, fair production of its carpet collections is not just a matter of principle, but a matter of course. All of its various collections are certified as Fair Trade carpets by the STEP label. Thanks to close collaboration with the Fair Trade organization, the production of its own carpet lines has been sustainably improved.
Fair trade carpet initiatives
Several organizations advocate for fair trade in handmade carpets. These include, in particular, the German organizations GoodWeave and Care & Fair , and their Swiss counterpart, Label STEP . These organizations combat exploitative child labor and promote the environmentally friendly production of carpets – principles that Mischioff also upholds in its own corporate philosophy.
During unannounced visits to the Manufactory , compliance with the guidelines is checked and any deficiencies are documented for immediate rectification. A seal of approval is awarded to manufacturers and Retailer who adhere to the prescribed guidelines. Only those who meet all fair trade criteria receive certificates for their products as genuine Fair Trade carpets.
Label STEP as a partner for fair trade carpets
Mischioff carpet manufacturing is Label STEP tested and certified. This independent non-profit organization has insights into the companies' material purchases and supply chains to ensure complete transparency.
Label STEP's mission is to ensure good living and working conditions in the production areas, promote environmentally friendly carpet production, and support sustainable development in the manufacture of handmade carpets. Mischioff's fair-trade carpets are not only produced under fair social conditions, but the company also places great importance on compliance with environmental standards.
