High-quality fair trade carpets are on everyone's lips and represent an important criterion for the purchase of a handmade carpet.
For many years, the carpet trade sector had fallen into disrepute and had to contend with quite a few prejudices. As many statistics show, this negative reputation is unfortunately not entirely unfounded, which is why it is all the more important to set an example as a retailer and end consumer with a genuine fair trade carpet. A signal for fair wages, for a sustainable and environmentally friendly production and against abusive child labor.
Various organizations work together with responsible manufacturers to promote fair trade and ensure compliance with the diverse conditions for genuine fair trade carpets. Fair trade and the sustainable production of high-quality designer carpets made of pure natural materials - this is what the Swiss company Mischioff has stood for for many years. Mischioff is now run as a family business in the fourth generation.

The carpet industry is an important economic component of the various producing countries, including Iran, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal and Turkey. Carpet weaving is a traditional craft here and provides income for many people and their families.
Fair and secure wage agreements are therefore an integral component of fair carpet trade and provide the basis for living wages for the weavers.
All Mischioff carpets are produced under fair trade conditions and are made of exclusive natural materials. Fair trade in handmade carpets does not only refer to fair wages, but additionally includes various basic social and environmental requirements that responsible manufacturers undergo.
These include environmentally compatible production, ensuring the health and safety of workers, observing maximum working hours and rest periods, and being intolerant of discrimination of any kind or sexual harassment.

An equally important aspect for fair trade carpets is the clear principle: child labor is prohibited! Thanks to various measures and initiatives, the proportion of child labor has fallen rapidly in the last ten years. This is also ensured by the fair wages, through which child labor is no longer necessary for the livelihood of the weaver families.
Instead, the children are accommodated in equipped day care centers and taught in schools. Compliance with the ban on child labor is regularly monitored and is an important license condition for the fair carpet trade.
As a long-standing partner of the independent fair trade organization Label STEP, Mischioff is committed to the strict prohibition of child labor and supports the establishment of day care centers and schools. In addition to the unannounced inspections by Label STEP, the two Mischioff managing directors Dani and Sascha Misio also regularly check compliance with the self-imposed fair trade standards in their own production facilities.
The fair production of its own carpet collections is not only a matter of the heart for the traditional Swiss company, but a matter of course. The various collections are all certified by Label STEP as fair trade carpet. Thanks to the intensive cooperation with the Fair-Trade organization, the production of the own carpet lines has been sustainably improved.
Various organizations stand up for fair trade in handmade carpets. These include, in particular, the German-based organizations GoodWeave, Care & Fair and their Swiss counterpart, STEP. The organizations take action against abusive child labor and are committed to the ecological production of carpets - principles that Mischioff also represents in its own corporate philosophy.
During unannounced visits to the factories, the guidelines are checked and possible deficiencies are recorded for immediate rectification. A seal of quality is awarded to manufacturers and dealers who adhere to the specified guidelines. Only those who meet all fair trade criteria receive certificates for their products as genuine fair trade carpets.
The Mischioff carpet production is Label STEP audited and certified. The independent nonprofit organization has insight into the companies' material purchases and supply chains to ensure complete transparency.
The mission of Label STEP is the commitment to good living and working conditions in the production areas, the promotion of environmentally friendly carpet production and the support of sustainable development in the production of handmade carpets. Fair-trade carpets from Mischioff are not only produced under fair social conditions, the company also attaches great importance to compliance with environmental standards.
