Everything is change
Sichouk SI50
In our latitudes, we associate the month of August with high summer temperatures and plenty of time spent under blue skies. We know August as a summer month. But south of the equator, August is a winter month.
It always comes down to our perspective. Change our point of view, and everything changes. The same is true for the Sichouk SI50 . This hand-knotted designer rug practically invites us to change our perspective.
Panta Rhei – a new carpet every morning
Everything flows – we cannot step into the same river twice. This is the concise formula upon which the worldview of the ancient thinker Heraclitus is based. Following this logic, can we then lie on the same carpet twice? No, according to Heraclitus, we cannot, because everything is in constant flux.
The Sichouk SI50 rug you place in your living space is therefore a new rug every morning, yet it remains a Sichouk SI50. Just as you constantly change, yet you remain you.
Now, Heraclitus wasn't a carpet philosopher, and we won't call him one, but his worldview remains highly relevant today, or perhaps especially so today. While the ancient tradition of carpet weaving might seem to contradict the constant process of creation and decay, as it contrasts the fast pace of modern life with adherence to old traditions, change is also palpable in the carpet craft.
The company Mischioff was founded in Switzerland in the 1940s. What began as a small carpet retailer into a renowned importer of classic Oriental rugs . In the 1990s, the two sons and current managing directors, Dani and Sascha Misio, launched their first own carpet collection, becoming pioneers of modern carpet development with their innovative designs and subtle color palettes. Their reinterpretation of antique designs gave rise to entirely new thematic worlds.
Achieving the highest quality standards has always been the focus, and the Sichouk Collection, with its pure silk carpets, exemplifies this perfectly. The newest carpet in this collection, the Sichouk SI50 presented here, continues the tradition of previous work while simultaneously reflecting ongoing development and evolution.
A masterpiece of modern carpet making
As a pure silk carpet with a pile height of approximately eight to nine millimeters, it is a rug that plays with the light, every breeze, and the viewer. The earthy colors give the Sichouk SI50 the character of a robust companion, the silky sheen makes it a gentleman among rugs, and the light and cheerful design lends it youthful charm. Whatever you wish to see in this rug, it is all there.
The Sichouk SI50 is a masterpiece of modern carpet making, and equally a master of versatility. Depending on the room it graces, its effect is always adapted to its surroundings. In a modern setting with clean lines and minimal distractions, it will be the radiant centerpiece. But the Sichouk SI50 is equally at home in a rustic timber-framed house, where its warmth creates a cozy atmosphere.
The Sichouk SI50 transforms spaces, demonstrating the power of a Mischioff rug and suggesting that Heraclitus, with his thoughts on becoming and change, may indeed have been a rug philosopher. Although Heraclitus is said to have been less than a great friend of humanity, his philosophical debates always centered on the essence of humankind. And nothing defines a person's character more than the living spaces they create for themselves.
Tradition in transition
The craft of carpet weaving is ancient, and indeed, it is still practiced today much as it was hundreds of years ago. However, the conditions have changed considerably. To ensure that people remain at the heart of the production process for Mischioff Fair Trade carpets , we have been working with the Swiss certification label STEP for over ten years. Thanks to this collaboration, the working and living conditions of the weavers are not only fair but continuously improved.
STEP's work is based on the standards established by the International Labour Organization (ILO). These standards include criteria for workplace design, fair wages, the promotion of training, environmentally friendly production methods, and, of course, the complete prohibition of child labor. In this way, Mischioff also becomes part of the change that humanity itself can shape – towards a better world.
