Swiss Embassy Athens

Geometry as a link in the Swiss Embassy in Athens

A special collection highlights the cross-border connections of the Swiss Embassy to Greece

The Swiss Embassy in Greece has 830 square meters of living space on a property that covers 4,500 square meters. Located in Chalandri, the Swiss Embassy is on the outskirts of Athens. The building was originally constructed in 1929 – it was time to modernize the premises.

The restoration of the Swiss Embassy was decided upon in 2013 – and much has been accomplished since then. This includes the renovation of the roof and the entire building envelope with improved thermal insulation, the installation of new heating and cooling systems, an overhaul of the electrical, plumbing, and drainage systems, and the installation of solar panels. In addition, the grounds were fenced and the rooms were redesigned.

For the latter, carpets from our company were chosen. A special design, produced exclusively for the Swiss Embassy in Greece, particularly reflects the close connection to Greece and its history. The pattern, consisting of multicolored triangles, is especially striking – a geometric symbolism closely intertwined with Greek history.

Thus, Pythagorean geometry emerged at the end of the 300-year-long upheaval in Greek society, laying a fundamental cornerstone for our modern understanding of the world – not only in a mathematical context. The circle, too, reappears as a geometric form in our carpet designs. Beyond all the mathematical fascinations associated with the circle, it also always symbolizes a closed unity – and this perfectly describes the self-image of an embassy located abroad in relation to the host country.
