Rug Of The Month March 2022: A Walk Through The Desert – Marouk MK51

We start the month of March with a walk through the desert. Even if it's still cold here, which is also the case in the desert, we're heading to warmer regions and celebrating a new design of our Marouk Collection.

The Marouk MK51 is a rug made of pure highland wool with typical Berber patterns. Its coloring reminds us of the sandy expanses of African desert areas. The Marouk MK51 has an extraordinary radiance that gives every room light, warmth and comfort. Regardless of whether you use it to equip your private or business rooms.

A Sign Of Beauty: Abrash

In the carpet world, abrash denotes slight color deviations, which are an absolute quality feature and proof of genuine craftsmanship. These color nuances were a feature of the production process, particularly in the case of the early nomad carpets. The yarn for the carpets was made by hand and this yarn was also dyed by hand. When new paint was made, it was almost impossible to get the exact same shade as before. The result was color deviations, sometimes even color jumps within a carpet. Even industrially manufactured carpets now imitate abrash and thus simulate this unique quality feature of old carpet art.

All Mischioff design carpets are made entirely by hand – as well as our new Marouk MK51. From the production of the weaving yarn to the mixing of the color, to the dyeing of the yarn and of course the weaving itself, the entire process is the work of diligent hands. And so a natural abrash can also be seen in the Marouk MK51, which gives the rug naturalness and liveliness. It also makes each of our rugs truly unique.

Marouk MK51

Lively Colors And Shades

The sand and ocher tones of the Marouk MK51, which sometimes seem lighter and sometimes darker, sometimes almost change to brown tones, accompany us on the desert walk mentioned at the beginning and let us dive into a world of antique carpet art. In the North of Africa, where the Berbers once roamed, where carpets and animals were often the only companions, life is rough but never monotonous. This is abrash, a relic of bygone times and a sign of the beauty of carpet craftsmanship.

Thanks to its unobtrusiveness, the wool rug adapts to any interior and any architecture. And its insensitivity and robustness, which it owes to the high-quality wool, allows it to shine even after many years of use.

New Wool From The Himalayas

The Marouk MK51 is made from pure, very high-quality highland wool. Sheep live high up in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, and they provide extraordinarily robust and resilient wool. The reason for this is the high lanolin content. This is the only way that the sheep can withstand the harsh weather. Mischioff only uses high-quality new wool for its rugs. This means that the wool is obtained from living sheep, which of course continue to live after shearing. The lanolin (wool fat) is retained even during the processing of the wool. It acts as a natural waterproofing agent that repels dirt and water. A property that makes our Marouk MK51 a lifelong companion and gives it its soft feel.

Of course we don't shear the sheep ourselves, but we have a look at who supplies us with the high-quality new wool. Like the entire production process of Mischioff fair trade rugs, our suppliers are also part of the Label STEP certification. For us, the Swiss label is there where we cannot be ourselves. But together we are committed to good and fair working conditions in carpet production.
