Rug Of The Month January 2022: Music In Every Fiber – The Nilanda NI44

Ta-ta-ta-taaa. If we present the idea of a new rug with the most famous sounds from the world of classical music, then it has to be a very special one. Beethoven's 5th Symphony begins with three eighth notes on G and a long E-flat. Everyone knows them, everyone loves them. It became known as the symphony of fate.

However, it is not fate that we have chosen our Nilanda NI44 as our rug of the Month for January. It is just as intentional, because no other carpet could announce the New Year better than this masterpiece made of finest silk and high-quality highland wool.

Silk And Highland Wool In A Unique Composition

The Nilanda NI44 is a composition by our designers Dani and Sascha Misio and it is at the same time an orchestral symphony of color, ornamentation, design, material and knotting technique. The harmony of all these elements makes this rug an invitation to affirm life with all its intensity and depth. The ornamentation of the Nilanda NI44 delves deep into the history of oriental carpets, which is emphasized again by the vintage look. Its colors play with emotions, its feel is that of a pure silk rug and its charisma turns every room into a concert hall.

Beethoven's 5th Symphony was premiered in December 1808 and is probably a prime example of the immortality of art. We do not know where our rugs will be in 200 years, whether anyone will still be resting or dancing on them. But we know that we want to create precisely these possibilities with our quality standards. We do not compromise on the materials that are used in our Nilanda NI44. The purest Chinese silk is used for more than 75 percent. The raw silk is dyed by hand on site in our carpet manufactory in Nepal and finally becomes the fiber that gives our Nilanda NI44 the incomparably soft feel and the delicately shiny surface.

What is not made of silk on this rug is made of Tibetan highland wool. The sheep that donate this special wool live in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, where only very fatty wool provides protection from extreme weather conditions. This wool is also dyed by hand with pure eco-friendly colors. This is the starting material to weave a rug that brings every property with it, only to gain in radiance and beauty over the years.

Nilanda NI44

„True Art Is Immortal“

The minor use of highland wool (around 25 percent) on the Nilanda Collection rugs is primarily used to accentuate the carpet design. It is the emphasis, the crescendo of the symphony, appears where more power, more volume is necessary, and then all of a sudden, subito piano, the delicate silk leaves the space again.

The artful play with the medallion pattern once developed in Persia, which is expanded here to include several medallions reflecting on the longitudinal axis of the carpet, spans the arc between histories, between yesterday and today, and thus shows that Beethoven's quotation “true art remains immortal” endures. The outstanding composer of the Viennese Classicism did not believe in an inevitable fate, but in the power of creativity, and in the fact that this creative element can bring something into the world that everything else survives.

The Sound Makes The Music

Our creative artists work in our carpet manufactory in Nepal. All Mischioff design carpets, including our Nilanda NI44 are made there. It takes several months for such a rug with a knot density of 160,000 knots per square meter to be completed and for all the final work to be done.

We have been working with the Swiss certification label STEP for more than ten years. In cooperation with their employees, we ensure that the entire process of creating our fair trade rugs is based on fair conditions and human interaction. Good working conditions are created not only for the weavers, their families and above all the schooling of the children is important to us. We go even further and also check the suppliers and delivery routes so that we can finally say: With the Nilanda NI44, music sounds in every fiber. We want to avoid discordant notes in the entire production process.
