Rug Of The Month December 2021: A Carpet With Berber Charm – Marouk MK18

It's the great properties that make Berber rugs so popular. Most of the time they are rather simple in color, so they fit into almost any living environment, the new wool makes them very robust and easy to care for, and they also have the typical "cozy character" that exudes a lot of warmth and comfort.

We are making our Marouk MK18, a piece of jewelery with typical Berber charm, the rug of the month for December 2021 and show the cold season that it is warmly welcomed.

Berber Rug Made In Nepal

For the Berbers, carpets were more than just carpets, they were often the only furnishings in their nomad tents. One ate and slept on such a rug and everyone sat there and listened to the stories of the ancestors. Indeed, there is an age-old African tradition of fairy tale telling that is as much a cultural asset today as the handicraft tradition of carpet weaving.

But since we don't want to tell fairy tales here, we don't pretend our Marouk MK18 is a real Berber rug. It cannot be because it is knotted in our manufactory in Nepal and not in Morocco or its neighboring countries. In their origins, the Berber carpets were also pure woven carpets, although knotting has now also established itself in the North African countries.

100 percent pure Himalayan highland wool is used for the Marouk MK18. It is called highland wool because the wool-giving sheep live high up in the mountains and not in the lowlands. Since the animals are often exposed to extreme weather conditions there, the wool is very dense, extremely robust and has a high percentage of wool wax, which acts as a natural impregnation. This wool fat is retained during and after the carpet production.

Marouk MK18

The Natural Product Pure New Wool

The result is the "cuddly character" of the Marouk MK18 mentioned above. It is particularly pleasant and gentle to the touch. By using this uniquely high-quality material, our Marouk MK18 becomes a woolen rug of the highest quality. But not only the natural product new wool is responsible for the high quality, the further processing in pure handcraft is an essential quality factor. Our new wool is spun and dyed by hand. As a result, the color image is never completely uniform and slight color nuances remain visible.

These so-called abrashs ensure liveliness and are always a sign of quality and craftsmanship. For the Berbers of North Africa, their carpets were neither decoration nor art, they were objects of daily use, which is why complex pattern were usually avoided. The Marouk MK18 also follows this tradition with its black diamond pattern.

The Craftmanship Of Weaving

Weaving carpets is an ancient human skill, carpets are mentioned for the first time in ancient writings from the 2nd millennium BC. There are various theories about the origin of knotting, none of which is considered certain. It is not unlikely that technology has evolved in different places at different times. Today the traditional art of carpet-making is part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity and is therefore particularly worthy of protection.

All Mischioff rugs are made in our manufactory in Nepal. And we are very aware that we are claiming a unique cultural heritage here. We are therefore also responsible for ensuring that this legacy remains alive. For us, this means that we pay special attention to the people who have mastered the art of knotting and who do it every day. The Swiss fair trade label STEP is a welcome partner for us. The STEP employees are on site and work with us to ensure good and fair working conditions, safety at work and beyond. This is the only way to create fair trade carpets like the Marouk MK18, which meet our high quality standards.
