Rug Of The Month June 2021: The Berber Tradition – Marouk MK50

The Berber tribes once populated the north coast of Africa. Continuous conquests by Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs forced the Berbers to retreat into the hinterland and into the mountains. Today the Berbers live in numerous North African countries. Much was lost. Their former language is rarely spoken, their religion has become Islam, but what the Berbers have retained over the centuries is their distinctive culture, which is repeatedly expressed in handicrafts. Carpet weaving is probably the most famous craft in the world.

With our rug of the Month June, we are expanding our Marouk Collection with an expressive rug that follows the tradition of Berber carpets. Pure highland wool and a typical Berber diamond pattern give the Marouk MK50 a timeless naturalness that enhances every room and every ambience visually and just as sensually.

A People With Carpet History

The nomadic lifestyle of the Berbers was due not least to the fact that they were either merchants or lived from animal husbandry. On the one hand, new sales markets had to be found for the merchandise and new pastureland for the animals, both of which made moving around necessary. Since this was not possible with heavy furniture, carpets became almost the sole furnishing item. The Berbers sat on them, slept on them or under them, and the tent walls were also hung with carpets to protect against the cold. The carpets were made from what was abundantly available: sheep's wool.

Since the carpets of the Berbers were in many cases purely useful objects, the dyeing of the wool or the detailed patterning of the carpets were largely dispensed with. And our Marouk MK50 follows exactly this tradition. Pure new wool from highland sheep gives this rug durability and robustness that will delight you for decades. Even heavily frequented walkways do not clog the carpet. The stable structure is accompanied by a soft feel that makes walking barefoot a pleasure.

Off-white as the background color and the black rhombuses make the rug expressive and exciting in terms of the spatial effect. The natural color gradients, so-called abrashs, which are created by pure natural wool, ensure liveliness and movement in the design. With the Marouk MK50, the brand manufacturer Mischioff spans the bow between traditional carpet art and modern carpet design and thus follows the unbroken call for modern Berber carpets, which is now even promoted by star architects.
