Music in every fiber

Nilanda NI44

Ta-da-ta-taaa. If we're going to introduce a new carpet with some of the most famous sounds in the world of classical music, then it has to be something truly special. Three eighth notes on G and a long E-flat—that's how Beethoven's Fifth Symphony begins. Everyone knows it, everyone loves it. It's become famous as the Fifth Symphony.

However, it is not fate that we are presenting our Nilanda NI44 as inspiration in January. It is entirely intentional, because no other rug could herald the new year better than this masterpiece made of the purest silk and the highest quality highland wool.

Silk and highland wool in an artistic composition

The Nilanda NI44 is a composition by our designers Dani and Sascha Misio, and it is like an orchestral symphony of color, ornamentation, design, material, and knotting technique. The harmony of all these elements makes this rug an invitation to embrace life in all its intensity and depth. With its ornamentation, the Nilanda NI44 delves deep into the history of Oriental rugs , a fact further emphasized by its vintage look. Its colors evoke emotions, its feel is that of a pure silk carpet , and its presence transforms any room into a concert hall.

Beethoven's Fifth Symphony premiered in December 1808 and is perhaps a prime example of the enduring power of art. We don't know where our carpets will be in 200 years, whether anyone will still be resting or dancing on them. But we do know that with our high standards of quality, we want to create precisely these possibilities. We make no compromises when it comes to the materials used in our Nilanda NI44. More than 75 percent of it is made of the purest Chinese silk. The raw silk is hand-dyed on-site in our carpet manufactory in Nepal and ultimately becomes the fiber that gives our Nilanda NI44 its incomparably soft feel and delicately lustrous surface.

What isn't silk in this rug is Tibetan highland wool. The sheep that provide the wool live in the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, where only a very oily wool offers protection against the extreme weather conditions. This wool, too, is hand-dyed with pure natural dyes. This creates the ideal material for weaving a rug that possesses every quality, only to gain in radiance and beauty over the years.

"True art remains imperishable."

The small amount of highland wool used (approximately 25 percent) in both carpets of our Nilanda Collection primarily serves to accentuate the carpet design . It is the emphasis, the crescendo of the symphony, appearing where more power, more volume is needed, only to then suddenly, subito piano, give way again to the delicate silk.

The artful interplay of the medallion pattern, originally developed in Persia and here expanded to include several medallions mirrored along the carpet's longitudinal axis, bridges the gap between history, between yesterday and today, thus demonstrating the enduring truth of Beethoven's quote, "True art remains imperishable." The outstanding composer of the Viennese Classical period did not believe in an inevitable fate, but rather in the power of creativity, and in the ability of this creativity to bring something into the world that would outlast everything else.

It's all in the tone that makes the music

Our creative artists work in our carpet manufactory in Nepal. All Mischioff design carpets , including our Nilanda NI44. It takes several months to complete a carpet with a knot density of 160,000 knots per square meter and to finish all the final work.

For over ten years, we have been working with the Swiss certification label STEP. In cooperation with their employees, we ensure that the entire production process of our fair-trade carpets is based on fair conditions and respectful interaction. We not only create good working conditions for the weavers, but also for their families, and especially for the children's education. We go even further, checking our suppliers and supply chains, so that we can ultimately say: With the Nilanda NI44, music resonates in every fiber. We want to avoid any discord throughout the entire production process.
