Berber carpet as a stylish home accessory

The Berber carpet is undoubtedly one of the hottest furnishing trends and is already considered a classic carpet by many.

Berber carpets have a long tradition

The Berber carpet has its origins in the very north of the African continent: in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. The Berber tribes, who lived as nomads, wove and knotted these robust wool carpets here generations ago. Their name is derived from this ethnic group who created this type of carpet. Originally these carpets were woven by hand. Knotting as a manufacturing technique only became established in the 20th century.

The carpets are made of robust, natural virgin sheep's wool, which protected the nomads from wind and cold . These carpets were used as blankets, underlays and also as wall hangings in the tents for numerous tasks.

Symbolism and design of Berber carpets

Traditional motifs adorn the knotted work made from virgin wool: triangles, diamonds and tribal symbols are typical of a Berber carpet. These differ depending on the region and tribe affiliation. This allows conclusions to be drawn about the manufacturer and production region. What all Berber carpets have in common is the typical asymmetrical pattern , which still makes them a decorative home accessory today.

Differences can be found in the colors. Most of them have a wool-white base tone , which acts as a contrast to the dark motifs; However, depending on the region, there are also variants with a different color scheme. Yellow, red or orange tones predominate , which are made from virgin wool dyed with vegetable dyes.

Works of art made from pure new wool

A Berber carpet is made of pure, hand-knotted new wool in natural tones. Mostly in off-white, beige or light brown - black versions are only rarely found - the wool is natural, i.e. washed and combed, but usually not dyed.

The inimitable character of the carpets lies in the asymmetrical designs. Various geometric motifs form clear patterns that are interrupted by decorations with various animal and tribal symbols.

The material used for traditional Berber carpets is high-pile wool fibers , which give the deep-pile carpets their characteristic “shaggy” look. A Berber carpet made of virgin wool represents a special tactile experience and represents real Berber carpet quality.

An important quality feature is the knotting. Classic Berber carpets from North Africa often only have a low density of 25,000 to 50,000 knots per square meter . If treated roughly, the carpets will quickly lose their wool.

To get around this problem, Mischioff has its own Berber carpets produced in Nepal. These Nepal carpets are similar to the originals both visually and in terms of craftsmanship, but have significantly better product properties.

Berber carpets from the traditional Swiss company

The design of the Berber carpets in the Mischioff collections are based on the North African originals. Hand-knotted and made from high-quality virgin wool, they are in no way inferior to real Berbers. Our carpets have a smooth, low pile, which makes the carpets significantly easier to care for than their “shaggy brothers”.

The careful and fine knotting of the high-quality highland wool also gives the Mischioff carpets greater stability , which the originals lack despite the Berber craftsmanship. Mischioff's Berber carpets are very robust, easy to care for and hard-wearing and therefore meet the highest demands.

Our collections offer the right solution for private living areas as well as for highly frequented areas in project areas. We would be happy to introduce you to our Berber carpets in more detail - discover our extensive range of decorative, hand-knotted carpets.
