Afghan rugs are typically made of high-quality virgin wool , meaning they are pure wool rugs . The wool usually comes from sheep in the Afghan highlands. The processing of the material is done by hand – from shearing, combing, washing, and dyeing to spinning and finally Weaving .
Different, natural plant fiber blends produce the various shades with which the wool can be dyed. Traditional Afghan carpets often feature dark red base colors and are mostly dark in tone.
